Sen. Tina Smith of Minnesota delivered an emotional and urgent message at a Saturday press briefing following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti in Minneapolis by a federal agent. Pretti, a U.S. citizen, Minneapolis resident, and nurse who worked with veterans at the VA, was killed during an encounter with federal officers that has since drawn national attention and sparked renewed debate over federal law enforcement operations in the state.
According to Smith, eyewitness video shows Pretti being beaten and then shot multiple times by federal agents. She described the incident as another example of what she characterized as reckless and dangerous conduct by federal law enforcement operating in Minnesota. Smith contrasted the actions seen in the video with what she described as standard law enforcement practices, which typically emphasize public safety and de-escalation. Instead, she said, the encounter ended with the loss of a civilian life.
Smith also criticized the Trump administration’s public response, noting that officials labeled Pretti a “domestic terrorist.” Emphasizing his background as a healthcare worker and community member, she expressed condolences to his family and friends and said the circumstances surrounding his death should concern people well beyond Minneapolis. “If it can happen here,” she warned, “it can happen in your community, too.”

At the briefing, Smith laid out several specific demands. First, she called on President Trump to immediately end “Operation Metro Surge,” a federal enforcement initiative operating in Minnesota, and to withdraw ICE agents from the state. She argued that their presence is making communities less safe rather than more secure. Second, she stressed the importance of a full and independent investigation into the incident. Smith said state investigators from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension should be allowed to thoroughly examine what happened without interference.
Smith also urged community members to channel their grief and anger peacefully. She referenced recent large public gatherings in Minneapolis, describing them as demonstrations of solidarity and care rather than violence. Maintaining that tone, she encouraged residents to continue expressing outrage in ways that strengthen, rather than fracture, the community.
A central part of Smith’s message was directed at Republicans in Congress. She called on GOP lawmakers to join Democrats in condemning what she described as a “violent and unfettered abuse of power” by federal agencies. Smith argued that Congress has leverage through its control of federal funding and said lawmakers should refuse to fund agencies that, in her view, continue to operate without accountability. She noted that she and Sen. Amy Klobuchar plan to pursue this strategy in the U.S. Senate.

While sharply critical of federal agents involved in the incident, Smith took time to thank local law enforcement and fire departments across Minnesota. Drawing on her past experience working in city government, she acknowledged the challenges faced by local responders and praised their ongoing efforts to protect public safety during a tense and painful moment for the state.
The press briefing underscored the growing political and public scrutiny surrounding federal law enforcement actions, the limits of accountability, and the broader implications for community trust and safety.
