The simmering conflict over federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota burst into full-blown controversy after a deadly shooting rocked the streets of Minneapolis—and now, Attorney-General Pam Bondi is unleashing demands that have jaws dropping all over the nation.

Bondi, known for pulling no punches, sent a scathing letter to Democratic Governor Tim Walz just hours after ICU nurse Alex Pretti, 37, was gunned down by Customs and Border Patrol officers during a dramatic confrontation on January 24, 2026. In her message, Bondi insisted Minnesota hand over detailed voter records along with data from Medicaid and food assistance programs if it wants federal intervention to ease tensions.
Bondi’s shopping list didn’t end there. She demanded Walz scrap laws protecting undocumented immigrants and force local officials to work closely with ICE. “Your state must step up to restore law and order,” Bondi thundered, throwing shade at leaders she blamed for fueling unrest. She claimed these ‘simple fixes’ would revive peace and public trust—but critics say it’s a thinly veiled scheme to seize election control ahead of another bitter presidential race.

Governor Walz, rattled by the fatal shooting and mounting anger in Minneapolis, had earlier pleaded with President Trump to pull ICE agents from Minnesota altogether. Bondi, however, turned up the heat, accusing local Democrats of letting chaos reign and suggesting federal support would only come at a steep price: unfettered access to personal voter information.
Election experts and Democratic lawmakers wasted no time ringing alarm bells. Top elections attorney Marc Elias blasted Bondi’s gambit as ‘extortion,’ warning that the Trump administration was gunning for massive datasets to rig voting processes and sabotage ballot access. “No White House in history has demanded this much sensitive info,” Elias warned, accusing Team Trump of trying to game swing states under the guise of law enforcement.

Senator Seth Moulton and his colleagues piled on, saying the crackdown was less about public safety and more about election meddling. “Let’s be real—this is just Trump laying groundwork to snatch electoral power,” Moulton sneered in a fiery post. On CNN, Senator Chris Murphy didn’t mince words: “This letter shows they’re trading violence and chaos for domination over Minnesota’s elections.”
With outrage over Pretti’s death still echoing across the state, Bondi’s bombshell ultimatum has only poured gasoline on the fire. Critics fear that Minnesota is being strong-armed into sharing intimate data as part of a nationwide scheme to tip the scales at the ballot box. The Department of Justice remains tight-lipped as the controversy boils—and the Daily Beast is still waiting for answers.
