It was a terrifying inferno that gripped a Milwaukee apartment complex in the early morning hours of January 16—and what followed was nothing short of heroic, desperate, and tragic.
Flames tore through the building on Fardale Avenue near South 27th Street, trapping residents and sending five people to the hospital. Among those caught in the chaos was Kessy, 28, who found herself cornered by surging smoke with her 9-year-old daughter, Ni’Lah. With no escape route, Kessy made a split-second decision that would stun even seasoned emergency responders: she hoisted her child up and pushed her through a second-floor window, hoping to save her from the fire that threatened to consume them both.

While Ni’Lah managed to escape with an injured leg and mild smoke inhalation, her mom wasn’t as lucky. Kessy was rushed to an intensive care unit, sedated and on ventilators, still fighting for her life. Meanwhile, another young victim suffered a shattered pelvis after leaping from a window, and others—ranging from children to seniors—were treated for severe injuries including slashes and overpowering smoke exposure.
First responders arrived to a nightmare. Firefighters hauled multiple residents out through upper-story windows and watched as some jumped to evade the deadly blaze, risking everything for survival.

But the most shocking twist came after the flames were extinguished. Police arrested 44-year-old Keith Luko, a fellow tenant, as the alleged architect of the disaster. Prosecutors slapped him with eight serious charges—arson, reckless endangerment, and more. Surveillance cameras reportedly captured Luko moving his belongings out hours before the fire started, then bolting as fire erupted. According to authorities, Luko confessed to dousing the hallway in gasoline and setting it on fire, furious over marijuana use by other residents.
As Kessy continues her battle in the ICU and neighbors count their scars, the city is left reeling from a terrifying ordeal and the shocking revelation that the fire may have been started by someone living right alongside the victims.
