Tennessee’s Misty McDaniel is at the center of a shocking elder abuse case that’s left her 74-year-old father fighting for his life—and her facing a flurry of serious charges.

Authorities allege that McDaniel, 42, permitted her bedridden dad’s health to decline so drastically that three of his spinal bones were exposed through raw, festering pressure wounds. The sensational details emerged after medical workers rushed her father—who suffered a stroke nearly ten years ago—to hospital on January 2. Once there, doctors were horrified to discover his blood sugar levels soaring beyond 600, a danger zone that can tip into diabetic coma.

Police tape off a crime scene, Saturday, July 6, 2024, on the 2600 block of Ridgecrest Drive in Florence, Ky.

Investigators say the bed-bound man’s condition had tailspinned over the last half-year as McDaniel, his primary caregiver, stopped providing the necessary attention and medical care. Not only did she allegedly withhold vital diabetes medication, but she also failed to address his worsening bed sores, leaving open wounds that medical experts deemed severe. According to court filings sourced by WATE, his lower back and multiple other areas suffered such deep ulcerations that his muscles and vertebrae were exposed, requiring urgent surgeries to remove dead tissue.

Local broadcaster WVLT reports that both McDaniel and her husband—who shared caregiving duties in the Knoxville home—ignored growing health alarms. Cops who searched the residence found untouched blood sugar medications that should have been administered to her father. Despite living under the same roof with her ailing parent and husband, McDaniel allegedly hadn’t bothered taking him to see a doctor in months, if not years, despite his fragile state.
