Barbie is honoring a living legend. The iconic doll brand announced that Dr. Opal Lee, widely known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” is receiving her own doll as part of the Barbie Inspiring Women collection.

The 99-year-old activist and retired educator is best known for her decades-long campaign to make Juneteenth a national holiday, a goal that was finally realized in 2021. Barbie described Lee as a “legendary” figure whose work helped reshape how the nation commemorates the end of slavery.

The Opal Lee Barbie reflects her familiar look from Opal’s Walk for Freedom, the annual event she founded to raise awareness of Juneteenth. The doll wears a custom event T-shirt, white joggers, and sneakers. Carlyle Nuera designed the doll, while the packaging was designed by Vicky Gevorkyan.

Lee’s commitment to Juneteenth is deeply personal. Born in Marshall, Texas, in 1926, she was just 12 years old when her family’s home was burned down by a white mob on Juneteenth in 1939. The attack left a lasting mark and helped shape her lifelong dedication to education, justice, and remembrance.

For years, Lee used symbolic walks to tell the story of Juneteenth, often walking two and a half miles to represent the two and a half years it took for news of emancipation to reach enslaved people in Texas. In 2016, she undertook a 1,400-mile journey from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., stopping in cities along the way to advocate for federal recognition, according to Variety.

Her perseverance paid off when President Joe Biden signed legislation in 2021 making Juneteenth a federal holiday. In May 2024, Biden awarded Lee the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, CBS reported. That same month, she received her eighth honorary doctorate, a Doctor of Humane Letters from Southern Methodist University.

Barbie and Lee marked the announcement with a joint Instagram post featuring photos of the doll, prompting an outpouring of praise from fans. Many highlighted the importance of representation and honoring real women who have shaped history.

“I was a Barbie girl growing up,” one user wrote. “It makes me so happy to see dolls for representation, for movements, for real women.”

Another added: “Thank you, Barbie, for seeing that representation matters and makes the world a better place.”
