Tina Peters, a name that has become a rallying cry for the MAGA faithful, is back in the headlines—and not for reasons her supporters would hope.

Claims erupted over the weekend that the notorious ex-Mesa County clerk was viciously assaulted in jail. Her spokesperson broadcast the news across social media, suggesting Peters, 70, was ambushed while minding her own business at Colorado’s La Vista Correctional Facility, where she’s currently locked up serving a nine-year sentence for her role in the 2020 election meddling scandal.

The representative’s post—racking up over a million views—painted a dramatic picture: Peters mechanically grabbing water in a maintenance closet when another inmate allegedly stormed in and lashed out at her in rage. According to the statement, Peters fended off her attacker with raised hands, sustaining only ‘minor injuries’ in the scuffle. The spokesperson expressed outrage, revealing Tina was slapped into solitary confinement and threatened with a fresh felony assault charge for, apparently, defending herself. ‘Who charges a 70-year-old grandma for self-defense?’

But hold your horses—a different story is emerging, courtesy of security camera footage scooped up by CBS News, 9News, and other outlets. The video tells a less flattering tale for the so-called ‘MAGA martyr.’ Peters is seen wheeling a cart through a doorway when a fellow inmate approaches, grabs hold of the cart, and gets partially blocked from view. Suddenly, Peters appears to seize the other woman by the neck and mutters something before pushing her away. Not quite the ambush her team described.

Colorado prison officials are now shooting back at the narrative, disputing both the injury claims and the story that Peters has been thrown into solitary. A Department of Corrections spokesperson insisted to 9News, ‘No one was hurt, and solitary confinement isn’t even used at La Vista.’ Instead, Peters was relocated within the facility after the scuffle, pending further investigation. Department reps kept mum when pressed for more details by The Independent.

This isn’t Peters’ first brush with headlines for physical confrontations. Back in 2022, a video surfaced appearing to show her kicking at an officer as they tried to arrest her—a move that didn’t help her legal woes. Peters has already been convicted of first-degree official misconduct and ignoring the secretary of state’s regulations.

Since her fall from grace, Peters has been embraced as a cause célèbre by Donald Trump and his base. The former president has repeatedly blasted her nine-year sentence and called for her release, turning her into a symbol for his supporters. Peters ran Mesa County’s elections from 2018 until 2023, but her tenure ended in disgrace amid allegations she leaked sensitive voting records. Prosecutors accused Peters of allowing unauthorized people to access election machines, launching her onto the national stage—and now, apparently, into the center of yet another jailhouse drama.
