Newly released surveillance footage captures a harrowing moment in Marion County, Florida, when a routine arrest escalated into a gunfight inside a moving patrol car.

The incident occurred in June after a sheriff’s deputy stopped 22-year-old Rheanna Harden on South Highway 441. According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Harden was initially arrested on multiple charges, including possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, providing false identification, and driving with a suspended license.

While being transported to the Marion County Jail, Harden was handcuffed and seated in the back of the patrol vehicle. But an arrest affidavit says she managed to slip one hand free from her restraints and open the plexiglass partition separating her from the deputy.

The newly released footage shows Harden reaching up to remove the rear-seat visor and covering the cruiser’s backseat camera. Moments later, she pulled a handgun concealed in her clothing and fired multiple shots through the partition toward the deputy.

The deputy returned fire as the vehicle veered out of control, eventually slamming into a utility pole. Authorities said both Harden and the deputy were injured in the exchange but suffered non-life-threatening wounds. They were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

After Harden was removed from the vehicle, deputies recovered a revolver near the scene with six spent shell casings, according to the sheriff’s office.

A set of handcuffs is pictured.

In the aftermath, Harden was hit with an additional charge: attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, significantly raising the stakes of the case.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 29, as investigators continue to review the incident that turned a routine traffic stop into a violent, high-speed nightmare inside a sheriff’s cruiser.
