Tragedy struck Queens just days into the new year when a beloved mother and grandmother lost her life in a suspected drunk driving incident, sending shockwaves through her tight-knit community.

Blancamir Arias-Miranda, 54, was heading home in the early hours of January 4, cruising through the bike lane on her electric scooter, when fate dealt its cruel hand mere blocks from her front door.

Police tape

Cops rushed to Crescent Street and 30th Drive around 1:45 a.m. after reports of an accident involving a 2009 Honda Civic and a 2021 Hiboy scooter. Arias-Miranda was hurled onto the pavement after the car plowed into her, leaving her critically wounded on the cold asphalt. The driver, Ryan Rampersaud, a 29-year-old local, emerged unscathed and remained at the scene but now faces a slew of serious charges — including Vehicular Assault, DWI, Driving While Ability Impaired, and refusing a breathalyzer.

Emergency responders whisked Arias-Miranda to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst, clinging to hope as she lay in intensive care. But heartbreak soon followed, with the NYPD confirming her death on January 6. The case continues to be probed by authorities, leaving many to wonder how such a devastating—in many eyes, preventable—loss could happen.

Friends and relatives are left in pieces, describing Arias-Miranda as the family’s powerhouse—a mother to four, grandmother, and loving wife who filled her home with warmth and unwavering support. “Just steps away from returning home, her life ended senselessly,” family members lamented on their GoFundMe appeal, now topping $48,000 in donations to help with funeral costs, household bills, and legal battles that await.

“Her strength held us together,” loved ones wrote, grieving a loss that has created an emptiness impossible to fill. As investigators dig into the details and the wheels of justice turn, Arias-Miranda’s legacy of care and resilience remains firmly in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
