Things are getting heated in the nation’s capital as Justice Department brass erupted this week over a Trump-appointed judge’s scathing questions about Lindsey Halligan’s claim to the powerful position of U.S. Attorney in Virginia—even after her appointment was ruled illegal.

The DOJ didn’t hold back, slamming the judge for what they called ‘basic’ misunderstandings of the law and accusing him of an ‘outrageous abuse of authority’ for throwing shade at Halligan’s credentials.

The fiery rebuttal, filed under Halligan’s name and backed by Attorney General Pam Bondi and her top deputy Todd Blanche, comes as Judge David Novak—handpicked by Donald Trump—slapped down a terse three-page order demanding Halligan explain why she continues to parade as U.S. Attorney. Novak gave her seven days to justify her title, even after a separate judge, Cameron McGowan Currie, ruled back in November that Halligan shouldn’t have worn the badge after her 120-day interim status expired.

Behind the scenes, the drama started when Trump himself installed Halligan, famed as his former private lawyer, as top prosecutor in Virginia’s Eastern District—fresh off boasting about axing her predecessor, who refused to bend under White House insistence to go after ex-FBI honcho James Comey and New York AG Letitia James. Halligan wasted no time indicting both men as soon as she got to her desk, but it didn’t stick—those cases got tossed out, and Judge Currie declared her appointment illegitimate, voiding everything she touched.

Now, Judge Novak wants to know precisely what authority Halligan has left, pressing her to clarify why using the title U.S. Attorney isn’t misleading the court. But the DOJ is doubling down, arguing that Halligan is still the legitimate U.S. Attorney—bluntly dismissing Currie’s earlier ruling as irrelevant outside the Comey and James cases. ‘Judge Currie’s conclusion doesn’t bind us,’ DOJ officials fired back in their latest motion, scoffing at any suggestion Halligan lied about her role.

Amid the courtroom firefight, D.C. insiders say Halligan isn’t backing down one inch. She’s angling to make her temporary gig permanent, with backing from inside the administration. Reports show she’s sent her paperwork to the Senate Judiciary Committee, hoping to secure the official nod as Virginia’s top federal prosecutor. ‘She’s the President’s pick,’ one administration source dished. Now all eyes are on the Senate as the drama over Halligan’s embattled title—and Trump’s influence over federal prosecutors—rages on.
