A Big Apple resident has landed herself in hot water, staring down a possible two-decade stint behind bars after admitting she set up an illicit cannabis empire deep in Maine’s countryside.
Federal officials revealed that Jiamin Liao, 30, hailing from New York City, stepped into the U.S. District Court in Bangor on Monday and confessed to running a property that functioned as an illegal pot operation.
According to court filings, Liao picked up a house in Madison, not for cozy weekend getaways, but specifically to manufacture and peddle marijuana. The Department of Justice said police descended on her Thurston Hill Road address in Madison this past March, where they made a jaw-dropping discovery: 551 fully-grown marijuana plants and a stash of chemicals and sophisticated growing gear littered the home.

But cops didn’t stop there. Investigators branched out to a second property under Liao’s name in neighboring Norridgewock, tracking her down and seizing approximately 30 pounds of processed marijuana ready for the streets. Authorities said Liao didn’t play coy when confronted—she admitted she cultivated the weed in Madison, packed it into one-pound bundles, and tucked it away at her second hideout in Norridgewock for distribution.

The state’s Office of Cannabis Policy confirmed neither Liao nor her properties had the proper licenses, making her operation strictly off the books. Now, she’s awaiting sentencing, with the possibility of 20 years locked up and fines reaching $500,000 looming large over her. Stay tuned for the final verdict in this rural drug bust showdown!
