Nearly a decade after his divorce from Monique Tepe, a physician is now accused of murdering her and her husband in their Columbus, Ohio, home late last year.

Michael David McKee, 39, is in custody in Illinois after being arrested on two counts of murder in connection with the December 30, 2025, killings of Monique Tepe, 39, and her husband, Spencer Tepe, 37, according to court records. McKee is being held in Winnebago County and is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Monique and Spencer Tepe were found shot to death in their home just north of downtown Columbus after Spencer, a respected dentist, failed to show up for work that morning. Concerned coworkers contacted police, who later discovered the couple’s bodies during a welfare check. Their two children, ages 4 and 1, were found inside the home unharmed.

Columbus police responded to 1411 N. 4th St. where they found Monique Tepe, 39, and Spencer Tepe, 37, dead at the residence. Spencer had been shot multiple times, according to a radio run log obtained via a public records request. Police found two young children at the home. A Columbus police spokesman said Dec. 30 there were no indications a murder-suicide had occurred, but could not provide further details.

The couple was remembered by loved ones as having a “beautiful, strong and deeply happy relationship,” according to an obituary. A joint celebration of life ceremony was held Sunday.

McKee was previously married to Monique Tepe in what court records describe as a brief marriage. The two wed in August 2015 and divorced in June 2017, about a month after Tepe filed for dissolution using her maiden name, Sabaturski. The records show no major disputes during the divorce. The couple had no children together and were living apart at the time, with McKee residing in Roanoke, Virginia, while completing his medical residency.

McKee is a licensed physician and surgeon in California and Illinois, according to state medical licensing databases. His Nevada medical license expired in June 2025. Records show no disciplinary actions in any of the states where he practiced. Most recently, McKee was listed as a vascular surgeon at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, Illinois, which said it is cooperating with authorities.

His medical training included medical school at Ohio State University, an internship at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, a residency at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine completed in 2020, and a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center completed in 2022.

The case gained momentum last week when Columbus police released surveillance footage showing a “person of interest” walking in an alley near the Tepes’ home in the Weinland Park neighborhood during the timeframe investigators believe the murders occurred. Police did not initially identify the individual or explain their interest.

According to CNN affiliate WBNS, detectives later linked McKee to a vehicle seen arriving near the home shortly before the shooting and leaving moments afterward. The vehicle was later located in Rockford, Illinois, where McKee was confirmed as the registered owner, the station reported.

Columbus police said McKee was taken into custody without incident on Saturday. Authorities have not yet said whether McKee is the person shown in the surveillance video. He is expected to be extradited to Ohio, where he faces two counts of murder in Franklin County.

The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare to bring the case back to Ohio court.
