A wild aquatic escapade landed a Louisiana woman behind bars after an alleged drunken outburst turned violent, authorities claim.

The bizarre incident unfolded on a chilly November day in the quiet Linville neighborhood of Marion, when a resident dialed the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office, desperate for help with an unruly and unclothed neighbor who refused to leave their driveway, raising a ruckus and ignoring repeated warnings.

Deputies raced to the scene, only to discover Erin Elizabeth Sutton, 41—and not a stitch of clothing in sight—making waves in the homeowner’s backyard pond and adamantly refusing to budge. Instead of cooperating with law enforcement, Sutton insisted she was channeling her inner mermaid, according to a dramatic update posted on the sheriff’s office’s Facebook page.

Police lights are activated on a squad car Saturday, May 28, 2022, in the parking lot of the Hard Rock Rockford Casino in Rockford.

Officers pleaded with Sutton to come ashore, finally coaxing her out of the frigid water after multiple attempts. Emergency medics arrived to assess her condition as temperatures dropped, wrapping Sutton in a blanket to shield her from the cold. But the calm didn’t last long, as authorities say the situation rapidly spiraled: When a deputy tried leading her inside to warm up, Sutton allegedly became combative, charging at him and fighting violently.

Deputies say Sutton resisted arrest at every turn, ignoring commands and escalating her attacks—kicking and punching a deputy even after a taser was deployed with zero impact. They finally subdued her and secured her for transport to a local hospital after she continued to thrash about. Allegedly still incensed, Sutton threatened to kill deputies and paramedics during the ride, police say.

Because of her need for medical treatment, officials held off on formal arrest and pursued warrants with the Third Judicial District Court. Then, on January 6, 2025, Sutton surrendered herself and was arrested—slapped with a laundry list of charges, including three counts of resisting an officer with force, two counts of battery of a police officer, public intimidation, disturbing the peace while drunk, and criminal trespass.

The suspected mermaid’s bond is making its own splash: authorities set it at a whopping $62,000. Looks like Sutton’s aquatic adventure earned more than just a cold dip—it landed her right in hot water with the law.
