Shock and sorrow have gripped Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, after a stunning tragedy unfolded Friday night — a mother of four and her longtime partner were found dead in what police are calling a likely murder-suicide, sending shockwaves through their close-knit community.

Sarah Rice, 39, described by loved ones as a devoted mother and friend, was discovered lifeless alongside Greg A. Johnson, 42, in the basement of their home. The grim discovery was made by one of the couple’s young children, who had just returned from a playdate. After entering the house, the child ran back outside in distress, alerting the adult who had brought them home that something was terribly wrong inside.

Police lights activated on an Evansville Police Department vehicle.

Emergency calls quickly brought Bethlehem police to the residence, where the full horror emerged: not only had Rice and Johnson succumbed to gunshot wounds, but two younger children and an elderly relative were also found inside, all unharmed. The older adult reportedly remained blissfully unaware of the violence that had occurred below. Authorities have stated this individual is not considered a suspect.

Long counted among Bethlehem’s familiar faces, Rice leaves behind three young children she shared with Johnson—aged just 8, 4, and 2—as well as a 24-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. Although never formally wed, Rice and Johnson’s partnership spanned over two decades. Now, her devastated family and friends are left grappling for answers.

Rice’s sister, Janelle Rice, launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the surviving children, heartbreakingly remembering Sarah as “a cherished mother, daughter, and friend stolen by a senseless act.”

Local news outlets including WFMZ, Lehigh Valley News, and Lehigh Valley Live have reported extensively on the tragedy. Neighbors are rallying to organize a candlelight vigil in front of the family’s home, struggling with the sudden loss. “She was adored by everyone,” neighbor Danielle Rau shared with reporters. “Her kids were the center of her universe.”

The Lehigh County Coroner identified both Rice and Johnson officially on Monday, January 5th. While Rice’s family has pointed the finger at Johnson as the gunman, Bethlehem police have not yet clarified the shooting’s sequence. The three minor children are now under the care of other relatives as investigations continue.

As grief reverberates in Bethlehem, loved ones are clinging to memories of a vibrant mother whose life revolved around her family, now gone in a devastatingly violent twist that no one saw coming.
