A wild scene out of Kentucky: Christopher Mollette, 37, found himself at Pikeville Medical Center as his ex-girlfriend brought his child into the world.
But what began as a momentous occasion quickly shifted gears into a crime caper, according to police reports. Barred from joining his ex in the hospital due to visitor restrictions, Mollette was offered a seat in her car outside to stay warm while she went through labor, local outlet Mountain Top Media says.
But when the new mom emerged, her ride had mysteriously vanished—and so had Mollette. Surveillance footage reviewed by authorities later showed Mollette initially slipping into the passenger side before sliding behind the wheel and peeling out of the hospital parking lot, reports The Mountain Citizen.
She frantically dialed Mollette to ask about her missing vehicle, but cops say he coldly brushed her off, telling her it was ‘none of her business’ and promptly hanging up.

The drama continued for another 45 minutes, until officers finally caught up with Mollette in Paintsville—almost an hour’s drive from the hospital—where he was arrested Saturday night. He now faces charges for auto theft and receiving stolen property, according to online jail records.

Mollette, whose rap sheet includes busts for meth, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia possession, along with traffic violations and dodging court dates, landed in Big Sandy Regional Detention Center. His bond? A hefty $10,000 for each count. What started as the birth of a child ended with sirens, handcuffs, and another mugshot for Mollette.
