Shockwaves rippled through Waverly, Tennessee on Friday morning after a nurse reportedly carried out a horrifying murder-suicide that claimed four lives, according to local law enforcement.

Humphreys County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a home for a welfare check and stumbled upon a grim scene: two women and two children dead from gunshot wounds.

Authorities identified the victims as Heather Thompson, 32, her sons Arius Thompson (age 4) and Isaiah Johnson (13), along with their grandmother, Evelyn Johnson, 88. Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed at a press briefing that investigators believe Heather Thompson fatally shot her family members before turning the gun on herself.

Police lights are activated on a squad car Saturday, May 28, 2022, in the parking lot of the Hard Rock Rockford Casino in Rockford.

The motive behind the bloodshed remains shrouded in mystery, fueling speculation and grief in the community. Officers said there were no signs of forced entry and, crucially, no evidence anyone else was involved. Neighbors and loved ones are reeling—and Sheriff Davis emphasized, “We’re committed to honoring this family with respect during an unthinkable tragedy.”

The children’s father, Biah Thompson, who was reportedly separated from Heather, made a heartbreaking statement on social media: “I miss my sons already. Daddy still loves you. Sorry I was at work.” He later shared his devastation, saying, “Hearing my boys were gone shattered my soul. They were just babies.” Thompson also revealed plans to raise funds to return his sons’ bodies to New Mexico for burial.

Law enforcement stressed that the household had not previously come to their attention for domestic violence or mental health concerns. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has joined the ongoing probe, but officials assure residents there is no lingering threat to public safety.

As the investigation continues and arrangements for the victims are made, the community is left mourning and searching for answers. Anyone needing mental health support is urged to reach out to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which is available 24/7 nationwide.
