A North Carolina neighborhood is reeling after a revered school teacher lost her life in a brutal home invasion that unfolded in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Zoe Welsh, 57, a cherished educator at Ravenscroft School in North Raleigh, made a desperate call to 911 around 6:30 a.m., her voice reportedly filled with terror as she begged for help. Moments after alerting authorities to a trespasser in her home on the 800 block of Clay Street, chaos erupted—police say the intruder viciously attacked her while she was still connected to the dispatcher.

Police lights activated on an Evansville Police Department vehicle.

Authorities raced to the scene, responding to reports of a break-in, and discovered Welsh gravely wounded, suffering from a catastrophic head injury, with shattered glass marking the entry. She was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries.

Police launched a manhunt in the area, quickly apprehending Ryan Camacho, 36, who was hiding nearby. Camacho faces charges of murder and felony burglary. Investigators believe there was no prior relationship between Camacho and Welsh.

A set of handcuffs is pictured.

Camacho’s criminal past reads like a rap sheet nightmare: since 2005, he’s racked up convictions, including a 2019 offense for firing a gun into a Wake County property and a slew of misdemeanors in Durham County just last November—among them, breaking and entering. Records show he has spent over five years behind bars and was only recently released from jail for violating parole earlier this year.

The tragedy sent shockwaves through the education community. Welsh, a dedicated science teacher and former department chair, had shaped young minds at Ravenscroft for nearly two decades and previously in Wake County’s public schools. A school spokesperson mourned her passing, praising her as the bedrock of their science department and a beloved friend whose absence leaves an aching void.

As the investigation continues, the community gathers to remember Zoe Welsh—a remarkable teacher whose life was stolen in a shocking act of violence.
