Kim Jong Un’s teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, has reignited a frenzy of rumors about North Korea’s next leader after making a dramatic appearance at the legendary Kumsusan Palace of the Sun—a venue saturated with historic significance.

State-run media in Pyongyang splashed images of Ju Ae alongside her father, fueling endless gossip about whether she’s being groomed as the future boss of the Hermit Kingdom.

Whispers about succession have swelled ever since Ju Ae crashed onto the public scene in 2022. Since then, she hasn’t been hiding in the shadows. On the contrary, she’s been glued to her father’s side on major occasions—from missile launches to front-row seats at diplomatic galas, and even tagging along on Kim’s showy journey to the Beijing “Victory Day” extravaganza last September. Now, political analysts say Kim’s decision to parade Ju Ae in such a sacred setting is a bold move, hinting he’s got a plan for his dynasty’s next chapter.

The latest round of intrigue hit fever pitch as Ju Ae, her mother Ri Sol-Ju, and Kim Jong Un marked New Year’s Day by paying homage to the embalmed remains of Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung, Kim’s illustrious father and grandfather, stored at the famous mausoleum. The powerful trio presented floral tributes at the towering statues of the nation’s past rulers, with KCNA vowing that loyal citizens would defend the country’s “great cause” and follow Kim Jong Un with unwavering devotion.

But not everyone’s convinced Ju Ae is the anointed successor just yet. Her supposed name wasn’t even confirmed by North Korean authorities—it was leaked by eccentric ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman after a notorious visit, later backed up by South Korean spies. Some experts, like Hong Min at the Korea Institute for National Unification, argue that the appearance of all three family members projects a carefully crafted family image—rather than a clear handover of power. Meanwhile, North Korea analyst Michael Madden speculates that, if Ju Ae is truly next in line, the country’s strongman style might have to change to prepare for the possibility of its first-ever woman at the helm.

While Kim’s influential sister Kim Yo Jong remains a perennial player in succession theories, the world is watching closely for hints of who will ultimately inherit the secretive regime. For now, the guessing game continues—Pyongyang remains as tight-lipped as ever, leaving analysts decoding every word and photograph for clues about the country’s future.
