Tragedy struck in paradise this month as beloved Wisconsin native Karen Johannsen, 66, met a horrific end on the sun-soaked beaches of Antigua.
The seasoned horseback tour guide, who turned the island’s scenic shoreline into her daily playground, was viciously attacked while leading riders across Runaway Beach on December 19.
Local police rushed to the Dickenson Bay area late in the morning, only to discover Johannsen lying unconscious after a savage assault. The attacker had reportedly struck her on the head with a mysterious weapon, leaving her with devastating injuries that doctors described as insurmountable.

Hospital staff at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre battled to save her life, later sending her by air ambulance to University of Wisconsin Hospital in a desperate bid for a miracle. But Johannsen’s prognosis was grim—she sustained a traumatic brain injury, shattered jaw, and multiple broken bones, according to heartbroken relatives. Placed on life support, she never regained consciousness as medical teams told her family there was no hope for recovery.
The fight for Karen’s life ended on December 26, just a week after the brutal ordeal. Antigua and Barbuda authorities swiftly opened a murder investigation, holding one man for interrogation. Johannsen’s sister, Lyn, revealed to WMTV that the individual being questioned is her former romantic partner, though police have yet to announce the suspect’s identity publicly.

For many in Madison, Johannsen’s loss stings even more. She was the daughter of the family behind Johannsen’s Greenhouse—a landmark business cherished by locals for five decades until its closure in 2013.
Karen had fully embraced island life, regularly posting sun-soaked updates of her horseback adventures on social media and forging close bonds within Antigua’s tourism community.
Police have appealed to anyone with leads to come forward and contact the Criminal Investigations Department, stressing the importance of justice for Johannsen.
The Minister of Tourism, Charles Fernandez, issued a heartfelt tribute: “On behalf of the Government and People of Antigua and Barbuda, we offer deepest sympathy on Karen’s sudden passing. She radiated positivity and warmth, touching both tourists and residents through her devotion to sharing the beauty of our island.”
Fernandez praised Johannsen’s unwavering commitment to local tourism, declaring that her legacy and love for Antigua will never be forgotten. The statement closed with assurances that officials are keeping her family in their thoughts during this painful chapter.
