January 2, 2026—Shea Briar’s fate was sealed long before dawn broke over Jay County, Indiana, on January 12, 2020.
The 31-year-old was discovered fighting for his life on a desolate stretch of rural road, unable to say a word to rescuers who stumbled on the grim scene. It wasn’t until he arrived at the hospital that doctors uncovered the jaw-dropping truth: a bullet was lodged in Briar’s heart, leaving no escape wound and spelling certain doom. Detective Ben Schwartz from the Jay County Sheriff’s Office summed it up for “48 Hours” reporter Anne-Marie Green: “He didn’t make it.”

But how did it come to this? Police wasted no time launching their manhunt, and a shocking tip soon arrived from Kristi Sibray—a name at the center of the drama. Sibray, once a cop herself, had connections to both the victim and Esther Jane Stephen, age 29. Known to friends as E.J., Stephen coached high school softball and shared a daughter with Briar, whom she was formerly engaged to.
For months leading up to the tragedy, Sibray says her home became a confessional for Stephen, who was often joined by her assistant at Jay County High School—19-year-old Shelby Hiestand.
Yearbook photos paint a picture of innocence, but the conversations behind closed doors took a dark turn. Sibray told investigators that Stephen repeatedly vented her frustrations about Briar. Their engagement had imploded, and Briar was pushing for legal visitation with their little girl. According to Tracy Hoevel, Briar’s mother, her son wanted nothing but the chance to care for his daughter: “He just wanted to see her and look after her,” she told “48 Hours.”
But Sibray claimed that Stephen was dead-set against sharing custody: “The baby belonged to her—she didn’t want anyone else involved,” she revealed on the record. Even more startling, Sibray confessed to detectives that Stephen seemed to brainstorm ways to make Briar disappear, although at the time Sibray dismissed the talk as mere venting. Now, it’s clear she wishes she’d paid closer attention to those chilling words.
