Chilling twists have rocked Madison, Wisconsin, after 24-year-old Brooke Strattan tragically lost her life — and the man she allegedly feared most has now confessed in court.
James Barnes-Morris, just 26, admitted guilt on a first-degree reckless homicide charge for Strattan’s shocking death, court documents reveal. This bombshell plea comes after prosecutors opted to toss out an even graver count of first-degree intentional homicide, following an agreement inked with Barnes-Morris, according to official records tracked online.
Brooke’s unsettling disappearance began on October 1, 2024, sparking desperate concern from her father, who reported her missing that day. Just 48 hours later, authorities pulled her body from a retention pond, sending shockwaves through the Madison community.
The criminal complaint paints a disturbing picture. In the early hours of September 29, a witness spotted Brooke and Barnes-Morris walking together down a Madison street. But within a day, things took a sinister turn: the same witness saw Barnes-Morris again — this time, alone, scratched up, visibly rattled, and schlepping a pair of soaked white sneakers.

When pressed about Brooke’s whereabouts, Barnes-Morris grew tight-lipped — telling the witness only that the couple had argued, but dodging further questions, the report says. That evasiveness would prove chilling in light of later events.
Police apprehended Barnes-Morris on October 2, discovering him tucked beneath a heap of clothes at a buddy’s apartment. In a backyard suitcase, investigators uncovered Brooke’s phone and her credit cards — more damning pieces in a grim puzzle.
According to the friend, tensions between Barnes-Morris and Brooke reached a boiling point at a recent get-together. Other party guests noticed the drama, too. One insider told detectives that Barnes-Morris grew furious after men at the gathering flirted with Brooke, sparking a fierce argument between the couple. The same witness claimed he offered Brooke a safe place to sleep that night — an offer she accepted after confiding that her boyfriend had allegedly threatened her life.
The next day, Barnes-Morris showed up solo, confessing to his friend that he’d gone walking with Brooke in a marshy area — before announcing, shockingly, ‘I left her there.’
But the most incriminating moment came at yet another social event. Multiple attendees recalled Barnes-Morris making deeply disturbing remarks, including, ‘I had to get rid of her, she knew too much,’ and a chilling request for ‘another brick and a rope.’
With his guilty plea, Barnes-Morris faces the full force of justice for a case that has rattled Wisconsin — and raised grave questions about warning signs ignored until it was too late.
