A woman’s alleged attempt at pulling off a brazen airport drug run has landed her in hot water—big time!
Officials at Sydney International Airport say they discovered a staggering 15 kilograms—yes, that’s 33 pounds—of methamphetamine cunningly disguised as ‘oolong tea’ bags in a suitcase right after Christmas.
The 40-year-old, hailing from Bonnyrigg, aroused suspicion during a standard border inspection on Friday, December 26. Customs staff tore open her luggage only to expose 18 tightly vacuum-packed parcels, every single one boldly labeled as premium ‘tea.’ But a quick chemical test revealed the real contents: pure meth, not a trace of caffeine in sight.
The contraband’s jaw-dropping estimated street value is over $13 million, enough for 150,000 separate hits if split into deals, say authorities referencing statistics from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission. Photographs released by the authorities show bags ostentatiously marked ‘oolong tea’ nestled amongst the suspect’s belongings.

The audacious plan failed, and Australian Federal Police wasted no time slapping cuffs on the passenger and securing the drugs. She now faces a serious charge: importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled substance—a crime that could see her behind bars for life. As of press time, her name has been kept from the public, but she’s set to appear in Sydney’s courts on December 27.
Detective Superintendent Morgen Blunden from the AFP declared in a statement that this bust should serve as a stark wake-up call to all travelers: anyone offering cash in exchange for delivering mysterious luggage is likely up to no good. Border Force officials reiterated that attempts to sneak narcotics into the country, especially by passing them off as everyday items, are all too common—but rarely successful.
The holiday season’s glamour gave way to a cold, hard police cell for one Australian woman, proving, once again, that crime doesn’t pay!
