From fashion royalty to courtroom drama—Italian style superstar Chiara Ferragni’s glamorous world has come crashing down in a whirlwind of scandal.

For years, the 38-year-old darling of Instagram captivated millions, raking in up to a staggering six figures per post. When she wasn’t cozying up with luxury giants like Versace, Gucci, and L’Oreal, she was running her own wildly successful beauty, fragrance, and eyewear empires. Even Netflix wanted in, releasing a tell-all documentary about Ferragni’s life with her chart-topping rapper husband, their extravagant Sicilian palazzo vows, and their splashy reality show The Ferragnez. She was so in-demand, Mattel even made a Barbie in her image!

But 2023 spelled disaster for Ferragni’s billion-euro universe—and all because of a little pink cake. The influencer’s empire, recently estimated at €75 million (£65m), slammed into scandal after authorities accused her of pulling a fast one with a luxury Christmas treat: a special-edition Pink Pandoro. Italian investigators allege Ferragni misled fans, making them believe profits from the pricey treats—a jaw-dropping triple the standard cost—would help a children’s hospital. In reality, the manufacturer, Balcoco, only gave €50,000 to the hospital, while Ferragni herself reportedly pocketed €1 million from the deal.

Now Ferragni is staring down the real prospect of prison—five years behind bars if convicted at her criminal trial in Milan. The dramatic saga, nicknamed “Pandorogate” in the press, has turned Ferragni from Italy’s style queen into its emblem of influencer excess.

But the cake caper wasn’t her only stumble. Just last year, Ferragni found herself tangled in a similar controversy over luxury-priced Easter eggs touted as charitable, only for reports to reveal a measly $41,650 of the $1.39 million raised actually reached charity. The fallout was so fierce, Italy even passed “The Ferragni Law,” a crackdown on misleading endorsements by big-name social media personalities, aiming to police those influencers with massive followings.

To dodge even more legal heat, Ferragni forked over more than €3 million across settlements—€1.2 million to an autism group, €1 million to the Turin children’s hospital, and a €1 million fine to the Italian Competition Authority.

Ferragni herself addressed the uproar in December 2023, tearfully taking to Instagram to admit to what she called a “communications error.” But will an apology and a few million euros be enough to save her reputation—or her freedom?

It’s a dizzying descent for Ferragni, who first shot to fame in 2009 while still a law student. Her blog, The Blonde Salad, became an internet sensation with its splashy colors, cheeky poses, and glossy editorial flair—seducing followers and fashion insiders alike. Now, all eyes are on her next move as the influencer once untouchable faces the fight of her life.
