Shock in Greenfield as locals made a grisly discovery along the Salinas River. Just after breakfast time on Sunday—at precisely 9:40 a.m.—a shocked resident dialed 911, reporting a lifeless body sprawled in the riverbed near Elm Avenue and Metz Road. The quiet city of Greenfield, nestled in California’s Salinas Valley about 150 miles south of San Francisco, was abruptly thrown into the national spotlight.

Two days later, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office broke the news: the deceased was Monica Yazaret Almanza Romero, a 32-year-old woman who called Greenfield home. Law enforcement officials are keeping tight-lipped while forensic experts work around the clock to determine how she died.
Commander Andres Rosas said investigators are waiting for autopsy results before revealing further details. Residents are left rattled, anxiously awaiting answers, as Greenfield—a town of nearly 18,000—tries to come to terms with the tragedy next to its famous river.
