Shocking new details have emerged from a Texas case that’s left the community reeling: Oninda Romelus, accused of fatally shooting two of her four children while injuring the others, is breaking her silence from behind bars—and pointing the finger at her own deceased son.

In candid interviews with KPRC from jail last week, the 28-year-old mom insisted she’s being branded a ‘monster’ unfairly. In a jaw-dropping twist, Romelus detailed her version of the tragic drive: She claimed her oldest son, 13-year-old O’Karreo Covington, actually aimed a gun at her first. Romelus even described the harrowing moment, insisting, ‘My son was growling at me… I begged him to stop.’

A set of handcuffs is pictured.

But authorities aren’t swayed by her account. Investigators allege it was Romelus who opened fire inside her car as the kids rode with her, paranoia clouding her judgement, according to police interviews. The outcome? Two children dead—O’Karreo and three-year-old Amourra Chappel—and two more, Kylee Romelus, 9, and Traviel Downer, 8, left fighting for their lives after sustaining gunshot wounds. The siblings were later found with Romelus at a Brazoria County gas station, all suffering from their injuries.

Court records reveal Romelus chillingly admitted to officers, ‘Instead of them doing it to me, I’m gonna do it to them.’ When asked to clarify, she reportedly replied, ‘Kill them all.’ Still, during media interviews, Romelus doubled down on her claims of innocence, stating, ‘I’m not crazy,’ and blaming the eldest victim’s ‘long track record’ of threatening behavior. She contended her actions that day were driven by fears her ex-partner was stalking the family.

As for her apparent confessions, Romelus attempted to shift gears, declaring, ‘I swear my hand before God, I don’t remember any of that.’ She also made the cryptic statement that her children are now ‘with the devil.’

Crime scene tape blocks off areas of the Palm Garden Hotel in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025. Investigators with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office gather evidence in the death of a woman found the night before.

The horrifying ordeal unfolded before sunrise—sometime ahead of 4:45 a.m., according to filings. After the bloodshed, Romelus phoned 911, then drove to a gas station in Angleton, summoning authorities to her location with her wounded children in tow.

One family member—a 17-year-old son—was absent from the tragic scene, his whereabouts unknown in the aftermath. Police continue to investigate his status, according to outlets KRIV and KPRC.

Romelus now faces two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, her fate hanging in the balance as more revelations are expected to surface from the courtroom.
