Shockwaves rattled a quiet Miami neighborhood after the lifeless body of Dr. Massiell Garay Sanchez, 32, was found chilling—literally—in the freezer of a Dollar Tree store early Sunday morning. Store staff made the gruesome discovery at roughly 8 a.m., sending investigators scrambling for answers in a case with more questions than clues.

Just the night before, Garay Sanchez, a revered Miami-based physician originally from Nicaragua and a devoted mother of two, reportedly entered the store but bought nothing. Surveillance footage and police reports suggest that after hours, she managed to slip into an employee-only back area where a commercial freezer sat. Through the night, she remained out of sight—until the sun rose and a horrified employee opened the freezer to find her unresponsive.

Police lights are activated on a squad car Saturday, May 28, 2022, in the parking lot of the Hard Rock Rockford Casino in Rockford.

Sources say Garay Sanchez was not employed by the store, nor was she expected to be at the premises. Investigators quickly ruled out foul play, confirming she wasn’t forced inside, but authorities remain baffled as to why the accomplished anesthesiologist, renowned for her work with children suffering from congenital heart conditions, ended up in such a dangerous spot.

Family and friends are shattered by the sudden loss. ‘It’s unimaginable. She was everything to her family,’ shared customer Gerardo Nunez with Local 10. Heartbroken relatives launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover expenses for returning her remains to Nicaragua, which had already drawn over $2,600 in donations by Monday. The appeal describes Dr. Garay as a beacon of empathy whose medical skill brought hope to many—and as a loving mother, whose two young children remain in Nicaragua, now without their center.

As detectives work tirelessly on the case, the Dollar Tree stayed closed until midday Sunday to allow for a full police sweep. Miami authorities continue to question relatives about Garay Sanchez’s recent state of mind and personal struggles, but so far, the cause of her tragic end is officially listed as ‘unclassified.’ The investigation remains ongoing, leaving the city—and her loved ones—desperate for answers.
