According to Norway’s leading tabloid Aftenposten, the serious injury occurred while Machado braved raging waves aboard a tiny fishing vessel during a dangerous ocean dash. Her representative, Claudia Macera, confirmed the jaw-dropping diagnosis, saying, “Yes, the fractured vertebra is real,” but refused to spill any further details beyond what Aftenposten had splashed on its front page. Once in Oslo, doctors at the University Hospital in Ulleval took a close look at the 58-year-old politician.

Though she’d missed her scheduled appearance at Wednesday’s Nobel ceremony due to the lengthy ordeal, the resilient Machado didn’t let the fracture keep her down. Just hours after her Thursday morning arrival, she powered past pain and leapt over hotel barricades to greet a throng of devoted fans. Now that’s a comeback!
