A woman and her young daughter narrowly avoided tragedy after a car crashed through a glass wall and plunged into an indoor swimming pool in southern France, authorities said.
The incident happened around 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Paul-Éluard municipal pool in the coastal town of La Ciotat. According to city officials, a 38-year-old woman was driving in the pool’s parking lot with her 5-year-old daughter in the car when she allegedly confused the accelerator and brake pedals, sending the vehicle straight into the building.
The car smashed through a glass panel and sank into the 25-meter indoor pool, startling those inside the facility. Two lifeguards and another bystander immediately jumped into action, diving into the water to rescue the occupants.
“Thanks to the quick intervention of two lifeguards and one person, the occupants were able to be removed from the vehicle, and there were no victims to be reported,” city officials said in a Facebook post. Firefighters, along with national and municipal police, arrived shortly afterward to secure the scene.
Photos taken after the crash show the vehicle resting at the bottom of the pool beneath lane ropes, with its rear doors open and at least one airbag deployed. Another image shows the shattered glass wall where the car broke through the recreational center.
Local outlet La Provence reported that fire and rescue officials believe the driver may have mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. The vehicle involved was identified as a Jaguar XF.
Despite the dramatic nature of the crash, both the mother and her daughter appeared to escape without physical injuries. They were transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution and were reportedly suffering from shock.
Following the incident, the municipality announced that the pool would remain closed for several weeks while crews work to remove the submerged vehicle and repair structural damage to the facility.
Authorities said an investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing, but credited the swift response of lifeguards with preventing what could have been a far more serious outcome.
