Tempers flared in American politics last night as Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar unloaded on Donald Trump, denouncing the ex-president as a ‘national embarrassment’ following a barrage of offensive remarks delivered at a rally in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania.
Trump, never one to shy from controversy, fired up his supporters with a tirade targeting immigrants—and Somalia was at the center of his crosshairs. He painted a shockingly negative portrait of the African nation, labeling it “filthy” and “disgusting” and declaring it to be a magnet for “crime.” As the crowd lapped up his words, Trump went so far as to question why America accepts people from what he dubbed “[expletive] hole countries” instead of “nice” Europeans from places like Norway, Sweden, or Denmark.

As if that wasn’t enough, Trump veered into personal territory, poking fun at the Minnesota lawmaker’s name and describing Omar as wearing “her little turban.” Incredibly, he even dredged up the debunked rumor about Omar marrying her brother, asking the audience, “Whatever happened to her brother?” His comments prompted some backers in the crowd to break out into chants of “send her back.”
Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district and has long been a favorite target in Trump’s culture war attacks, wasted no time blasting back online. She took to X (formerly Twitter) to hit out at what she called Trump’s “weird fixation” on her. “He needs help,” she fired off, accusing the Republican leader of pushing hateful falsehoods because he “lacks any economic achievements” to boast about. Her bottom line: “He remains a national embarrassment.”

The animosity between the two figures is hardly new, but their feud has reached new heights as Trump’s rhetoric escalates. Just last week, the former president accused Somali refugees living in Minnesota of “roving the streets looking for prey” and making off with “billions of dollars” from the state—a claim with little basis in fact.
Meanwhile, a New York Times report suggested that ICE agents are preparing to target Somali individuals in Minnesota who have received final deportation orders, sparking concerns in the state’s Somali community, some of whom have reportedly begun to carry passports at all times.
Trump’s repeated broadsides haven’t come without cost. Omar has faced a deluge of racist abuse, and most chillingly, a 30-year-old man is now facing up to five years behind bars for posting grotesque threats online against her and her family.
With 2024 looming, it’s clear that the bitter battle between Trump and Omar is only heating up, and neither side is backing down from the clash.
