Rumors swirling around Washington suggest President Donald Trump is eyeing a shake-up at the top — specifically, talk that Homeland Security boss Kristi Noem could be out. But the White House is coming out swinging, blasting the claims as complete ‘FAKE NEWS!’ The latest bombshell traces back to The Bulwark, which stirred the pot Saturday by quoting three ex-Department of Homeland Security officials — none named, by the way — who allegedly have the inside scoop from current insiders. They claim Trump is weighing whether to cut Noem loose, despite her aggressive stance on immigration that sits at the heart of his agenda.

White House press dynamo Abigail Jackson didn’t mince words on X Sunday, torching the gossip: ‘Anonymous former staffers pretend to know what POTUS is thinking and the Bulwark treats them as credible?’ She doubled down: ‘This “report”—and the Bulwark—is total FAKE NEWS! Secretary Noem is doing a great job implementing the President’s agenda and Making America Safe Again.’

Why does this matter? With Trump’s strict immigration crackdown losing steam among some Americans and the specter of a cabinet shake-up looming at year’s end, speculation is mounting over who might be shown the door. Any changes at DHS or elsewhere would be huge signals about priorities going into next year.

The Bulwark’s sources — said to have served under both Biden and Trump and all unnamed — insist conditions are ‘fluid,’ with two hinting Noem could be ousted imminently. Their story highlights Noem stepping back from key department directives, and claims frustration within White House circles, especially over her tight relationship with the controversial Corey Lewandowski. Back in November, CNN also reported that Trump’s team was unhappy with Lewandowski’s influence, stoking talk that the DHS might get a makeover before New Year. A White House confidant told CNN: ‘Yes, he likes [Noem], but it has been brought to his attention that [Lewandowski] is a problem, and the agency is being mismanaged because of it.’ Lewandowski hit back at these reports, telling The Bulwark, ‘None of that is true.’

Amid all this drama, another name’s getting tossed into the ring: Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, set to wrap up his term in January. Those same former DHS insiders suggest Youngkin could be in line to replace Noem, though CNN previously reported Youngkin’s sights are set on business or economic roles — not DHS. Newsweek reached out to Youngkin on Monday to clarify his plans.

Through it all, Noem stays in the public eye, doubling down on her support for Trump’s agenda and touting the administration’s tough stance on immigration enforcement. What happens next at DHS? Washington is watching — and waiting for the next twist.
