Madison County became the center of a chilling crime when Kalena Stubbs, 51, reportedly turned a heated argument with her ex-boyfriend into a true-life horror show. Prosecutors say Stubbs doused her former partner with lighter fluid and set him ablaze, then went into cover-up mode before dialing 911. Her attempt to spin a fireplace mishap unraveled quickly after authorities arrived on January 16.

Police lights activated on an Evansville Police Department vehicle.

Stubbs claimed her ex simply ‘fell into the fireplace while holding lighter fluid,’ but investigators weren’t buying it. When first responders rushed to the Madison County residence, they found the victim suffering devastating burns on his torso, arms, and face. Oddly enough, his clothing appeared untouched by the flames—a detail that aroused suspicions and led to a bombshell confession from Stubbs. She admitted swapping out his clothes before making the emergency call, hoping to bolster her fabricated story.

On the scene, officers also spotted an open bottle of lighter fluid perched on the mantel, but it was suspiciously pristine with no evidence of fire contact. This, coupled with the victim’s injuries, prompted detectives to dig deeper.

The victim’s ordeal was far from over—he was airlifted for treatment and endured a grueling recovery in burn units and nursing facilities, fighting his way back after being scorched across his entire upper body. Once he was able to speak again, he named Stubbs as his attacker, aligning perfectly with the burn marks investigators documented.

Justice, at least in the eyes of the law, was swift and severe. Madison County District Attorney Bubba Bramlett announced that Stubbs pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and was handed the maximum sentence allowed: twenty years behind bars, with no chance for reduction. “These injuries rank among the worst we’ve seen,” Bramlett said, expressing hope that the outcome offers some closure for the victim—whose scars, both physical and emotional, will linger for life.
