In a shocking daylight crime that rattled Rainier Beach, 88-year-old Emma Cotton was viciously assaulted in her own backyard—and endured a horror few could imagine. On October 13, the Seattle grandmother was tending to chores behind her house when an unknown man emerged from the alley and confronted her out of nowhere, demanding she hand over her valuables. Confused and unable to understand his words, Cotton tried to head for the safety of her home, but the assailant pounced, forcibly dragging her into her garage and unleashing a merciless beating.

Cotton, desperate for help, screamed for neighbors as the culprit ripped jewelry from her body—including a ring he took in the most gruesome manner possible: by biting off her finger. “I told him, that’s the lowest thing anyone could do. How would you feel if someone did that to your mother or grandmother?” Cotton recounted to FOX13, still shaken weeks after the atrocity.

Law enforcement agencies from Seattle, Burien, Tukwila, and the King County Sheriff’s Office responded rapidly and canvassed the area, but the suspect—a man believed to be in his 30s—managed to vanish before capture. Nearly two months later, the attacker remains on the loose.

Seattle Police, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers, have released images of the wanted man and are dangling a $1,000 reward for any tip that brings him in. The community is alarmed, with officers urging anyone with information to step forward and help bring justice for Emma.

The ordeal left Cotton hospitalized with shattered bones and severe head trauma, forcing her to spend weeks learning to walk again. The psychological scars lingered, haunting her recovery with relentless nightmares. Despite her suffering, the resilient octogenarian says she has chosen forgiveness—hoping the man responsible will eventually seek redemption. “He had no right to invade my space while I was working in my own yard,” Cotton declared. The search continues for the man who turned her peaceful afternoon into a living nightmare.
