A deadly two-car collision in Cordova, Tennessee, has taken a grim turn after investigators determined that the driver who died in the wreck had been stabbed moments before losing control of his vehicle. His wife, 56-year-old Sheila Ann Curtis, is now charged with second-degree murder in the death of her husband, Derrick Curtis.

Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office responded around 9:55 p.m. on Nov. 29 after reports of a serious crash near Houston Levee Road and Macon Road. When they arrived, they found a Chevrolet Colorado overturned in a ditch and first responders performing lifesaving measures on Derrick Curtis. He was rushed to Regional One Health in Memphis, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

But what initially looked like a tragic collision quickly raised deeper concerns. Deputies noted that Derrick Curtis’ wounds appeared far more severe than the minor damage to the vehicle would explain. A large pool of blood on the driver’s side floorboard and the location of the injuries suggested something had happened before the crash.

Paramedics later confirmed that Curtis had suffered three stab wounds to his left leg. Even more crucially, he was conscious long enough to tell medical personnel that his wife had stabbed him.

Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit immediately launched an investigation. According to a probable cause affidavit, Sheila Curtis denied any involvement in the stabbing. She told investigators she and her husband had attended a funeral together, got into an argument, and that he later dropped her at their home before driving off alone. Detectives, however, found inconsistencies in her account.

A family member picked up Sheila and her mother shortly after the crash — two miles from the crash site. During the ride, Sheila’s mother reportedly said the couple had “gotten into it” on the way back from the funeral, a comment that further contradicted Sheila’s story.

Investigators also learned the couple had a documented history of domestic violence, adding weight to their suspicions. After collecting statements from witnesses and reviewing forensic evidence, detectives concluded that Derrick Curtis’ stab wounds were inflicted before he crashed, and that the injuries directly contributed to the wreck.

Sheila Curtis is now being held at the Shelby County Jail on a $500,000 bond. She is expected to appear in court Wednesday morning for a bond hearing.

For a family already grieving the loss of a loved one, the details emerging from the investigation suggest a deeper, more painful tragedy — one rooted not in an accident, but in violence behind closed doors.
