Scarlett Johansson is doubling down on her loyalty to Woody Allen, even years after his daughter’s explosive accusations of sexual abuse rocked Hollywood. In a candid chat with The Telegraph, the 41-year-old superstar addressed the potential fallout from her controversial choice to back the embattled director, now 90, when his adopted daughter renewed allegations against him in 2019. Did her allegiance cost her friendships or film deals? Johansson shrugged: ‘It’s tough to say. There’s no way of knowing what ripples you set off.’

Scarlett credits her mother for teaching her to stand firm. ‘Integrity matters,’ she insisted. ‘You have to defend what you believe.’ But with a dash of grown-up wisdom, Johansson admitted she’s learned when to share her views and when to keep quiet: ‘You don’t always have to be the loudest voice. Sometimes, it’s just not your moment.’

Johansson’s ties to Allen go way back — she’s the leading lady in not one, but three of his films, including the steamy ‘Match Point,’ comic romp ‘Scoop,’ and fan favorite ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona.’ Despite a tidal wave of criticism, she stood nearly alone among big names willing to publicly stand in Allen’s corner while others, like Diane Keaton and Javier Bardem, offered their own support. The director, meanwhile, has fiercely denied all allegations ever since they originally emerged in 1992.

Rewind to 2019 — at the height of the #MeToo reckoning — and Johansson wasn’t mincing words in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter: ‘I love Woody. I believe him, and I’d work with him any time.’ She described their relationship as open and straightforward, claiming, ‘He’s always been honest with me and insists he’s innocent. I believe him.’

The accusations trace back to 2014, when Dylan Farrow, Allen’s adopted daughter, penned a gut-wrenching letter to The New York Times accusing him of assaulting her as a child during his relationship with screen icon Mia Farrow. Allen vehemently pushed back, flatly denying the allegations and alleging that Mia Farrow manipulated Dylan to get revenge after their breakup. Authorities looked into the claims, but the director was never criminally charged.

Hollywood remains polarized, with some stars forever swearing off collaborations with Allen. The controversy swirls not just over the allegations, but Allen’s eyebrow-raising marriage to Soon-Yi Previn, the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow — a union marked by a staggering 35-year age difference.
