A chorus of Republican women stepped into the spotlight Friday, demanding justice after the deadly shooting of West Virginia National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old soldier deployed to Washington under President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown. Beckstrom died of her injuries late Thanksgiving Day, a grim milestone that has ignited fierce outrage from women lawmakers across the GOP.

U.S. Rep Nancy Mace, one of five Republicans competing in the 2026 gubernatorial primary, speaks before Spartanburg County Republican Women, gathering at the Citizens and Southern Event Center in downtown Spartanburg, S.C. Monday, August 25, 2025.

Leading the charge is South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace, who has transformed herself into one of the party’s most hard-line voices as she campaigns for governor. Appearing on Fox News, Mace leveled sharp criticism at federal vetting practices and called for the harshest punishment available. She argued that suspect Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who came to the United States during Operation Allies Welcome, should be executed for the attack that left Beckstrom dead and fellow soldier Andrew Wolfe, 24, fighting for his life.

“I hope the DOJ and the judge in this case will put this terrorist down,” she said, leaving no doubt about her position as she pressed for the death penalty. For Mace, the shooting sits at the intersection of national security, immigration policy, and public safety — all issues she has folded tightly into her campaign message.

She was not alone. West Virginia Sen. Shelley Moore Capito echoed Mace’s call during an appearance on Fox & Friends, saying the attack on uniformed service members in the nation’s capital demands the “ultimate charges.” Capito, the most senior Republican woman in the Senate, framed the killing as a direct assault on those sworn to protect the public.

The reaction underscores how women in the GOP are taking the lead in responding to the tragedy, positioning themselves as defenders of both national security and the service members who carry out those missions. Their response also highlights the growing influence of female lawmakers in shaping the party’s public-safety rhetoric, particularly in the Trump era.

Beckstrom, a young soldier from Webster Springs, had joined the Guard in 2023 and was deployed to D.C. as part of Trump’s push to curb violent crime. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed Friday that charges against Lakanwal will be upgraded to first-degree murder. Wolfe remains in critical condition.

The shooting unfolded Wednesday afternoon near the Farragut West Metro Station, a few blocks from the White House. Authorities say Lakanwal opened fire before being shot by Guard members and taken into custody. Federal officials later noted Lakanwal had once been part of a CIA-linked partner force in Kandahar, a detail now sparking renewed debate about the vetting of U.S. allies who arrived after the 2021 evacuation from Afghanistan.
