Irish mixed martial arts fighter Sinead Kavanagh found herself in handcuffs after a Ryanair flight from Gran Canaria to Dublin reportedly descended into chaos Monday night. Spanish outlets Atlántico Hoy and Canarias 7 report that officers were called to the aircraft after Kavanagh, 39, allegedly became violent before takeoff.

According to the flight crew, the Bellator featherweight was exhibiting aggressive behavior shortly after boarding. The Civil Guard responded, boarding the plane around 7:30 p.m., where they attempted to remove Kavanagh and another woman from the flight. What happened next was caught on camera by stunned passengers.

Footage shows Kavanagh grappling with two officers in the narrow aisle, twisting and resisting as they attempted to restrain her. A distressed woman nearby can be heard pleading, “Don’t do this! Please!” as the confrontation escalates.

Spanish authorities say Kavanagh “repeatedly struck” two officers while being taken into custody. One officer was later placed on medical leave due to injuries sustained in the scuffle. Kavanagh was detained in an airport holding cell overnight.

On Tuesday, she was brought before a court in Telde, Spain, where she was released on bail but remains under investigation for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. Officials have not confirmed whether the second woman involved will also face charges or travel restrictions.

The Civil Guard later criticized their lack of resources in an online post widely interpreted as a response to the incident, calling the confrontation “shameful” and noting they were forced to subdue “professional fighters unarmed and without resources.”
