An Italian pension scam straight out of a dark comedy blew open this month after a 56-year-old man — dressed head-to-toe as his deceased mother — walked into a registry office and set off alarm bells with a disguise that looked more Mrs. Doubtfire than matriarch.

The man had been collecting pension payments belonging to his mother, 85-year-old Graziella Dall’Oglio, ever since her death in 2022. For three years, he allegedly slipped into blouses, skirts, lipstick, and a short brown wig to keep the fraud alive. Authorities say he pocketed at least €53,000 — roughly $60,000 — plus additional income tied to family property.

The deception collapsed on Nov. 16 when he showed up at the Borgo Virgilio registry office to renew his mother’s ID card. A sharp-eyed clerk noticed something was off: the heavy makeup, the strangely stiff wig, and what appeared to be beard stubble poking through greasepaint on the neck.

A set of handcuffs is pictured.

Mayor Francesco Aporti said video footage sealed the suspicion. The “elderly woman” had arrived by car — despite never having held a driver’s license. “Piece by piece, the picture of this unpleasant situation began to emerge,” Aporti told Corriere.

The clerk called the imposter back to the office, where the mayor and police confronted him. He admitted everything on the spot: the disguise, the pension withdrawals, and that “Graziella” was his mother — not the woman in the scarf and cardigan standing before them.

When officers accompanied him to the family home, the story took a darker turn. Inside a bedroom, they discovered the mummified remains of Graziella Dall’Oglio. An autopsy is expected to determine when and how she died, though authorities believe natural causes are likely.

The man, a former nurse who is now unemployed, had never reported her death. Investigators say the family wasn’t struggling financially, making the scheme all the more baffling.

“It’s a very, very sad story,” Mayor Aporti said — one that began as a grotesque impersonation and ended with a body left untouched while her son stepped into her clothes to steal her life, one check at a time.
