Rumors are swirling yet again about Vice President JD Vance’s marriage after eagle-eyed internet sleuths noticed Usha Vance’s bare finger at a recent public appearance—and the response has set the record straight in dramatic fashion.

The talk kicked off after Usha Vance showed up with the First Lady, Melania Trump, at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina on November 19. Social media was quick to explode when fans realized her wedding band was nowhere to be seen, triggering whispers of trouble in the second couple’s household.

Sen. JD Vance (Ohio) celebrates with crowds on the floor as he introduced with his wife Usha Chilukuri Vance during the first day of the Republican National Convention. The RNC kicked off the first day of the convention with the roll call vote of the states.

A spokesperson for the vice president’s wife wasted no time in dousing the online firestorm. In a statement sent to People magazine, the spokesperson explained, “Usha is juggling three young children, constantly up to her elbows in dishes and giving baths. Sometimes the wedding ring just doesn’t make it back on.”

Not everyone was convinced, and speculation grew wilder still, tangled up with recent buzz around JD Vance and Erika Kirk — the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Last month, during a University of Mississippi stop on the Turning Point USA tour, Erika Kirk shared the stage (and an emotional hug) with Vance, gushing about how much the vice president reminded her of her late husband. “Nobody could ever take my husband’s place,” she insisted, addressing the crowd. “But honestly, I see elements of him in JD.”

Photos of the two embracing quickly spread online, leading amateur detectives to connect dots—accurately or not. Erika Kirk addressed the chatter during her appearance on Megyn Kelly’s show, describing the hug as innocent and routine: “I touch everyone’s head when I hug them. That’s just something I do. If folks want to make something more out of it, maybe they just need a good hug themselves,” she quipped. She doubled down on the Vances’ good character, previously telling Fox News that JD and Usha were “the most incredible, genuine couple.”

All the drama highlights just how obsessed the public has become with the personal lives of high-ranking leaders—and the Vances, who’ve been open about their mixed-faith marriage and family challenges, are no exception.

Despite the social media frenzy, Usha Vance has kept a packed schedule, seen alongside her husband at various public and charitable events. All signs indicate she’s brushing off the speculation, showing that sometimes a missing ring is just that—a missing ring. The Vances’ team, meanwhile, isn’t letting wild rumors get in the way of their focus, making it clear that family routines—not scandal—are behind the headlines.
