ragedy erupted in a quiet Florida community Friday when a routine eviction spiraled into chaos—leaving a veteran sheriff’s deputy dead and two others wounded.
It all unfolded in Vero Beach’s exclusive Bermuda Club on November 21, as law enforcement set out to help a mother oust her own son, Michael Halberstam, from her home. But what should have been a straightforward operation turned fatal in an instant.

According to Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers, Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, 47, entered the home alongside two fellow deputies and a locksmith right after noon. As authorities crossed the threshold, Halberstam, instead of leaving quietly, opened fire without warning. The entryway became a war zone as bullets whizzed past.
Mashkow was fatally shot, making the ultimate sacrifice in service to her community. Another officer suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder but survived. The locksmith, caught in the crossfire, was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery. Fortunately, the third deputy managed to avoid injury and returned fire.
Sheriff Flowers, visibly shaken as he addressed reporters, revealed more disturbing details. Halberstam himself was badly hurt in the shootout and was hauled off to the hospital, also in critical condition. Flowers recounted the string of troubling calls to his office from Halberstam’s mother over the past month—six in total—raising concerns about her son’s behavior.

Investigators discovered a trail of bizarre and negative social media posts by Halberstam aimed at the sheriff’s office just days before the deadly clash. His history with police was already stained by a 2006 narcotics bust and a 2015 misdemeanor from Virginia.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is now mourning the loss of Mashkow, who dedicated 25 years of her life to the force. Sheriff Flowers paid tribute to her, describing her as a “beautiful soul” who left an indelible mark on everyone she met.
“She gave everything for us—she’ll never be forgotten,” said an emotional Flowers, fighting back tears.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also commented on the heart-wrenching situation, assuring the public that state law enforcement agencies are joining the investigation.
The close-knit Vero Beach community remains shocked by this senseless outburst of violence during what should have been just another day on the job for local deputies.
