TikTok creator Maurice Harrison built a following by being unmistakably, unapologetically themselves — bold, funny, stylish, and vibrant in a way that drew in hundreds of thousands of viewers. Offline, the 21-year-old worked as a hairstylist in Pompano Beach, crafting looks with the same confidence and flair that animated their videos. On Nov. 14, that life ended abruptly and violently, leaving a grieving family, a stunned fanbase, and a community grappling with the loss of a young Black creative whose presence had only just begun to take shape.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a medical call in Lauderdale Lakes around 7 p.m. that evening. When they arrived, they found an individual suffering from gunshot wounds in the front passenger seat of a vehicle. The victim — later identified as Harrison — was taken to a nearby medical center, where they were pronounced dead.

Authorities say 23-year-old Shanoyd Whyte Jr., who told detectives he had been in a relationship with Harrison “for several years,” has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder with a firearm. He is currently being held without bond. According to an arrest affidavit, investigators believe an argument inside Whyte’s vehicle escalated into physical violence. At some point during the confrontation, Harrison was shot while still sitting in the passenger seat.
The details are still emerging, but the outlines form a heartbreakingly familiar shape for many LGBTQ+ advocates: a young Black person, a rising talent, allegedly killed by someone who said they loved them. While authorities have not classified the killing as a hate crime, artists and activists who followed Harrison’s work say the tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about intimate-partner violence against trans and gender-nonconforming people.
Harrison’s online footprint, though now partially deactivated, shows the charisma that fueled their rise. Their TikTok account has become a memorial space filled with condolence messages and tributes from fellow creators, clients, and friends. One of the most public tributes came from rapper JT, who donated $13,500 toward Harrison’s funeral through a GoFundMe launched by the family.
“Rest beautiful girlala!” she wrote on Instagram, using the moniker Harrison was best known by. “Your boldness, energy, humor & beauty will be missed. I’m sorry this happened to you.”
Harrison’s family, in a statement on the GoFundMe page, wrote that they “appreciate every prayer, kind thought, and gesture during our time of bereavement.” They plan to release details for those wishing to contribute directly to the funeral home once arrangements are finalized.
