Brittany Miller, a British TikTok influencer known for her food and lifestyle videos, has apologized after admitting that she fabricated a cancer diagnosis several years ago. The 29-year-old, who grew up in Oxfordshire and now has more than 3.5 million followers, addressed the controversy in an emotional social media video, saying the lie stemmed from a period of serious mental health struggles in 2017.
Miller said the false claim began as a private comment made to someone in her circle during a difficult time when she was depressed and suicidal. The remark, she explained, spiraled out of control when others repeated it and a fundraising page was created in her name. She stated that she never intended to deceive people or profit from the situation and that she shut down the page immediately after seeing donations appear.
The influencer, now a mother of twins, said she takes full responsibility for her actions and described the incident as a mistake made during a time of desperation rather than malice. According to her, the goal at the time had been to keep loved ones close amid feelings of isolation. In her apology, Miller expressed regret and emphasized that she understands the pain her lie may have caused to those affected by cancer.
The situation first came to light when Miller began collaborating with a cancer charity in 2020, after which her former friends spoke out. Renewed attention was drawn to her past in 2023 after accusations resurfaced online, leading to widespread criticism and speculation about her intentions.
Authorities confirmed that an investigation into the incident had concluded, though they did not verify reports of a fraud conviction. Other media outlets have stated that Miller was charged with fraud by false representation in 2020, receiving a conditional discharge and being ordered to pay compensation and court costs. The record is no longer active on basic criminal checks.
Former acquaintances have since claimed that Miller was more involved in creating the fundraising page than she has admitted, suggesting that she directly encouraged friends to share it. They expressed frustration that her followers may not know about her past actions, particularly given the sensitivity surrounding false claims of serious illness. One former friend also came forward to state that Miller would try to make her feel guilty about not visiting her in the hospital and that Miller had also taken money from one of the friend’s family members.
Despite the controversy, Miller’s online career has continued to grow. Her videos often feature her partner, Ash Griffiths, and their twin sons, Elijah and Emiliano, as well as home renovation and recipe content. The family recently moved into a new home in East Sussex, reportedly supported by her social media earnings.
In recent months, she has also addressed separate allegations made by online critics about her parenting. Miller revealed that she was contacted by social services after being reported anonymously but said that no further action was taken. She described the experience as distressing and said it reinforced her determination to protect her children from online hostility.
Reflecting on her earlier mistakes, Miller has said she wants to use her platform to raise awareness about mental health. She credited her family and followers for helping her recover from what she described as the darkest period of her life. In her apology, she said she has learned from the incident and hopes to move forward as a better person, acknowledging the seriousness of her past actions and the impact they had on others.
