What began as a family under pressure — crushed by debt, illness, and despair — spiraled into one of the most disturbing domestic cases Florida police say they’ve ever seen. Barbara Bates, 59, of Lehigh Acres, has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated child abuse after she allegedly helped her husband, Neil Bates, 64, attempt to carry out a family suicide pact that included their adult son, who has Asperger’s syndrome. All three survived.
Her Plan Was Months In The Making

According to a probable cause statement from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Barbara Bates told detectives she had been planning the killings “for months,” after her family faced eviction and mounting medical challenges. She said she had “concluded that she would no longer want to continue living” and that her husband and son eventually agreed. The couple’s son, described by police as having “overt developmental disabilities,” was central to the plan. Neil Bates initially told police it was his son’s idea to die together — a claim detectives say he later softened. Investigators wrote that the family “came to a consensus” to end their lives before losing their home.
The Family Spent Their Final Night Together

Barbara tried to buy a gun but failed background checks, according to the police report. Instead, she bought alcohol, sleeping pills, and steak — their chosen “final meal.” She also selected a movie for their last night together: The Long Walk, a Stephen King adaptation. On the evening of November 3, the Bates family sat down to watch the movie. Halfway through, police say, Neil began drinking heavily while their son swallowed a handful of sleeping pills Barbara had given him. Afterward, the family moved to the master bedroom.
They Tried To Slit Their Own Throats

Neil reportedly picked up a box cutter and began cutting his own throat. Barbara told police she thought the wound wasn’t deep enough — so she took the blade and “cut the right side of Neil’s throat,” adding additional lacerations “to increase the blood flow.” Then she turned to her son. Detectives say she “stabbed her son in the neck near his left ear, slicing his throat downward to the larynx.” For nearly forty minutes, she sat beside them, monitoring the bleeding before cutting her own wrists.
She Wasn’t Happy That Law Enforcement Did Their Job

When the plan didn’t work fast enough, Barbara called 911. When deputies arrived, she was still conscious. “She voiced her displeasure that law enforcement responded so efficiently,” investigators wrote. All three family members were rushed to the hospital, where doctors say they’re expected to make a full recovery. Barbara reportedly told police that she still wished the plan had succeeded — and “did not demonstrate any remorse.”
Neil Regrets Everything

Neil Bates is also facing charges of attempted murder and abuse of a disabled adult. In his statement to police, he called the night “irrational,” saying he now regrets going through with it. The tragedy of the Bates family — a mother, father, and son collapsing under the weight of illness, poverty, and hopelessness — has stunned investigators. How did a family convince themselves that dying together was easier than surviving alone.
