Thelma Todd was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1906. An excellent student, she initially planned to become a teacher and attended Lowell State Normal School to train for that career. Her path changed after she began entering beauty contests and was crowned Miss Massachusetts in 1925. Discovered by a Hollywood talent scout, Todd joined Paramount’s acting school and soon moved to California, where she quickly established herself in comedies produced by Hal Roach Studios. Known for her intelligence, professionalism and sense of humor, she appeared in over 120 films during her brief career. Her unexpected death in December 1935 at age 29 — she was found in her car, dead from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning — turned her from a rising Hollywood figure into one of its most enduring mysteries.

Todd attended a party at Café Trocadero on the night of December 14, 1935, an event hosted in her honor by actress Ida Lupino and her father. She was seen socializing and reportedly arguing with her ex-husband, producer Pat DiCicco. Her chauffeur dropped her at home sometime between 3:30 and 4 a.m. on Sunday, December 15. The following day, she failed to show up at her restaurant when movie executives showed up, after she had jokingly challenged them to do so. On Monday morning, her maid found her body slumped over in her Lincoln Phaeton in a garage above her café in Pacific Palisades. Dressed in her evening gown and mink coat, Todd appeared to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning at some point on Sunday.

The Investigation and Conflicting Evidence

Police initially called Todd’s death a suicide but soon revised their conclusion to accidental death. The autopsy revealed carbon monoxide poisoning and alcohol in her bloodstream, suggesting she may have been intoxicated. However, minor injuries, including throat damage and cracked ribs, raised questions about how she sustained them. Investigators noted that the car’s fuel tank was not empty, an unusual detail if the engine had been running for many hours. The distance from her apartment to the garage, requiring a climb of over 270 steps, also fueled skepticism, since her family reported she had a weak heart and her shoes showed little wear.

Theories and Suspects

Several theories emerged to explain Todd’s death. Some believed she had been locked out of her home and tried to warm herself in her car, unaware of the danger. Others suspected foul play. Her business partner and companion, director Roland West, was rumored to have quarreled with her about her drinking and business management. His estranged wife, Jewel Carmen, claimed she saw Todd alive the following day, though her testimony was inconsistent. Todd’s ex-husband, Pat DiCicco, was known for violent behavior, and her reported association with gangster Lucky Luciano led to speculation that organized crime may have played a role. Despite the rumors, investigators could not link any suspect to her death.

Public Reaction and Lasting Controversy

Todd’s death drew intense public attention. Newspapers published daily updates, often blending fact with speculation about Hollywood lifestyles and criminal influences. Reports surfaced of extortion attempts and anonymous threats against Todd, adding to the confusion. Her restaurant, Thelma Todd’s Sidewalk Café, had been a high-profile gathering spot for celebrities, which only fueled interest in the case. A grand jury reviewed the evidence and ultimately agreed with the finding of accidental death, citing a lack of proof of foul play. Nonetheless, many in Hollywood and the public remained unconvinced, believing that her connections to volatile figures and ongoing business disputes could have led to her demise.
