Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is facing criticism after photos surfaced of her and her boyfriend dressed in racially charged costumes at a Halloween party in Loveland, Colorado.
Images obtained by ABC News show the Colorado Republican wearing a traditional Mexican-style dress and a sombrero, while her boyfriend, real estate broker Kyle Pearcy, wore an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) vest over military-style fatigues. The two attended the event on Friday night, according to multiple reports.
Another image from the same evening shows a chalkboard sign in the background with a message written in mock Mexican dialect: “Mexican Word of the Day: JUICY. Tell me if Juicy Ice coming.”
“It was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen,” one attendee told ABC News. “Even the conservatives [at the party] were in shock. People avoided them.”
Boebert’s office defended the congresswoman in a brief statement, saying: “It’s a Halloween costume. Tell our Senators to vote for the CR and open the government. They are choosing to let millions of American families suffer.” The statement did not address the criticism directly.
Boebert, who represents Colorado’s 3rd congressional district, is no stranger to controversy, but this latest incident, with its racial undertones, has landed differently.
While Boebert has built her brand on provocation, cultural and racial caricature remains a volatile subject even within Republican circles. One Colorado political strategist said “There’s a difference between being politically combative and being culturally offensive. This blurred that line completely.”
By Sunday morning, the photos had spread widely online, prompting condemnations from civil rights groups and immigrant advocates. The Colorado Latino Forum called the costumes “a cheap stunt that turns human suffering into a punchline.”
As of Monday, Boebert had not publicly commented beyond her office’s short statement.
