South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace is facing new controversy following reports that she berated law enforcement and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel during an encounter at Charleston International Airport this week. The incident occurred the morning of Thursday, October 30, according to an airport police report, and quickly drew attention as the Republican lawmaker continues her campaign for governor in the 2026 election.
The Charleston County Aviation Authority Police Department said officers were asked to meet Mace at the airport around 6:30 a.m. to escort her to her flight, but confusion arose about her vehicle and point of entry. When officers later located her near a security checkpoint typically used by airline crew members, the situation escalated. The report states that Mace became visibly upset and used profanity toward officers, calling them “incompetent” and insisting she was being mistreated as a sitting member of Congress.
The officers said Mace continued voicing her frustration as she was escorted through the terminal and onto her flight. TSA personnel who witnessed the exchange later reported being disturbed by her tone and language. According to the report, TSA supervisor Johnny Lynch informed police that he planned to file an internal report about what he described as “unacceptable behavior.”
Mace, however, disputed much of the account. In posts on X, formerly Twitter, she denied that the exchange represented misconduct and said she was following established procedures for federal officials. She wrote that the entrance she used is the same one employed by other South Carolina lawmakers, including Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, adding that reporters were mischaracterizing her actions. She accused the Post and Courier of Charleston, which first reported the story, of spreading inaccuracies and claimed her campaign was being unfairly targeted because of her position in the governor’s race.
Her campaign’s director of operations, Cameron Morabito, said the incident was overblown and linked the heightened scrutiny to Mace’s rising political profile. He emphasized that the congresswoman’s team takes security concerns seriously due to recent threats and that her use of specific entry points is determined by safety protocols, not privilege.
The confrontation took place during a period of strain for airport workers, many of whom are operating without pay amid a federal government shutdown. TSA agents and local police have reported increased stress and limited staffing as a result.
Attorney General Alan Wilson, one of Mace’s Republican opponents in the governor’s race, criticized the alleged behavior, saying that airport staff and security personnel deserve respect and professionalism.
The incident adds to a string of headline-making moments for Mace, who has built a national reputation for her outspoken style and political independence. While she has frequently aligned herself with former President Donald Trump, branding herself “MAGA Mace,” she has also occasionally broken with party leadership on key votes.
Recent polling by the Trafalgar Group placed Mace in second place in the Republican primary for governor, behind Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, with more than 40 percent of voters still undecided. Despite the controversy, Mace’s campaign has maintained that she followed normal congressional travel procedures and that the reports misrepresent a routine airport visit as misconduct.
