Whitney Cheatham / Cullman Police Department

In a mugshot that’s been shared across the internet, Whitney Cheatham looks more like a pageant contestant than a criminal defendant — grinning ear to ear, confident, and waving to cameras as she’s led away in handcuffs. But behind that smile, Alabama authorities say, was a sprawling family-run drug operation built out of a small-town wellness spa. Cheatham, 34, the owner of Infusion Wellness and Spa in Cullman, Alabama, was arrested in August and now faces 25 felony charges, including trafficking opium, distributing controlled substances, and forging prescriptions. Prosecutors allege that the spa — which once offered IV therapy, Botox parties, and weight-loss programs — also served as a front for an elaborate prescription drug trafficking ring.

She Was Taken Down In A Sting

According to court records and local news reports, investigators began looking into Cheatham after receiving a tip in early August that she had been writing fraudulent prescriptions to obtain powerful narcotics like oxycodone, hydrocodone, Adderall, Xanax, and even testosterone. Within two weeks, authorities filed a sweeping indictment accusing her of using local pharmacies to fill the fake prescriptions, then collecting and reselling the drugs. The story might have ended there — one woman, a business, and a cache of pills — but the deeper police dug, the stranger the case became.

The Family Business

Investigators soon alleged that Cheatham’s father, Kelvin, and her estranged husband, Cody Ray Smith, were also part of the operation. Both men have since been arrested. Smith, 36, was already facing a separate set of charges from a child exploitation sting run by Chris Hansen’s “To Catch a Predator” team earlier this year. Her father’s record is even darker: he pleaded guilty in 2008 to sexual misconduct involving a minor, serving six months in prison. Court filings describe the drug case as a “family enterprise,” with each member playing a role — from writing prescriptions to distributing the drugs.

Cheatham Continues To Smile Through Everything

The Cullman County District Attorney’s office says Cheatham’s indictment includes three counts of trafficking opium and multiple conspiracy charges, each carrying potential sentences of 25 years or more. Despite the seriousness of the charges, Cheatham’s demeanor hasn’t changed. She’s smiled through court appearances, waved at cameras, and posted bond — an eye-catching $1.05 million, which she reportedly covered through a combination of cash and bail assistance.

There Are More Charges On The Way

Authorities say their investigation is ongoing and that more charges may be coming. For now, the spa remains shuttered, its pastel signage still visible through the windows — a faded reminder of a business built on wellness and, prosecutors say, something much darker underneath. Chetum has pleaded not guilty to all charges. She’s due back in court later this month.
