Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and conservative activist Riley Gaines traded barbs online this week and it all began when Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer who has built a career criticizing the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports, accused Ocasio-Cortez and her allies of “destroying the country.” In a post to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Gaines shared a photo of Ocasio-Cortez at a rally alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, writing, “We’re being destroyed from within.”
AOC Went Goblin Mode

Ocasio-Cortez didn’t let it pass. “Maybe if you channeled all this anger into swimming faster you wouldn’t have come in fifth,” the New York congresswoman wrote, referencing Gaines’s fifth-place finish at the 2022 NCAA swimming championships — the race in which Gaines tied with trans athlete Lia Thomas, whose participation has fueled Gaines’s political rise.
Gaines Says AOC IS Being A Misogynist

Riley Gaines speaks at a vigil held for Charlie Kirk outside the Sumner County Administrative Building in Gallatin Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025.
Gaines called the jab “misogynistic” and pointed out that Thomas had been ranked 462nd in the men’s division before transitioning. “It’s always hilarious when they think they’ve landed a ‘gotcha’ by pointing out I was the 5th-fastest woman in the nation yet they conveniently forget the mediocre man who ranked 462nd in the men’s division lol,” she wrote. “Misogynistic dunce.”
Gaines Tried To Use The Exchange To Book A Debate

Riley Gaines speaks at a University of Oklahoma Turning Point USA chapter speaking event in Norman, Okla., on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
The spat — sharp even by social media standards — reflects two very different approaches to political communication. Ocasio-Cortez, long adept at wielding humor and pop-culture savvy online, used mockery to deflate Gaines’s self-righteous tone. Gaines, meanwhile, sought to turn the exchange into fuel for her brand, using it as a launchpad to appear on Fox News and challenge Ocasio-Cortez to a live debate. “I’m challenging AOC,” Gaines said during an appearance on The Ingraham Angle. “Any of the radical, insane Democratic policies that they stand for — I’ll debate the opposite.”
AOC Doesn’t See Gaines As A Worthy Opponent

Ocasio-Cortez, however, brushed it off. Quoting the interview clip, she replied, “And I would like to challenge this person to get a real job.” Gaines hit back again, calling the remark “comical” and claiming that Democrats were responsible for the ongoing government shutdown, leaving Ocasio-Cortez “technically…jobless.” She added, “I guess I’ll take that as a no (which is to be expected when your positions are indefensible on virtually every issue).”
AOC Ended Things By Logging Off

Hours later, Gaines invoked her role as a mother to further criticize Ocasio-Cortez. “I have a real job. I’m a mom,” she wrote. “It’s the most important and rewarding job in the world. I think if you had a baby girl like I do, you’d understand my positions a little better.” Ocasio-Cortez, who has often been the target of conservative outrage online, did not respond further. Still, her quick and cutting replies once again highlighted her ability to control the tone of an argument — and, perhaps more importantly, the audience watching it unfold.
