Authorities in New York City are investigating after a young woman’s body was found stuffed inside a bag on a Harlem sidewalk Monday evening — a grim discovery that has shaken one of the city’s busiest corridors.
Police say Metro-North personnel first called in the report around 6:30 p.m., after spotting what appeared to be an unconscious woman under the elevated train tracks near Park Avenue and 124th Street. When officers arrived, they found a black garbage bag tucked inside a green duffel bag. Inside was the body of a white woman believed to be in her twenties. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
By Tuesday morning, authorities had not yet identified her, and the city’s medical examiner had not determined a cause of death. There were no visible signs of trauma, according to law enforcement sources.
The location of the discovery — directly under the Metro-North tracks — is an area well known to locals. “This is the second time I know of them finding a dead body over there,” said Smokey Rodriguez, a 25-year-old sanitation worker who’s been cleaning the area since 2018. “I’ve seen people on drugs, falling over, hitting their heads, going into seizures, and dying.”
Rodriguez said it was one of his co-workers who made the initial discovery while clearing debris beneath the tracks. “They need more cops patrolling the area,” he said. “Even with MTA police, they need more. Especially in blind spots where people can’t really see when it’s dark.”
The scene on Monday night was illuminated by flashing blue lights and, hauntingly, by strands of holiday decorations — yellow, purple, and green lights hanging from the overpass. Behind the police tape, a small group of onlookers gathered, some filming on their phones, others just staring in silence.
Residents say the stretch of Park Avenue between 124th and 125th has long been neglected — a place where trash piles up and homeless residents take shelter. “There are kids around here,” Rodriguez added. “They have to live in this area knowing there’s so much dangerous stuff going on.”
For now, the woman’s name remains unknown — just another unsolved case in a city that sees too many of them. Detectives are hoping the medical examiner’s report and nearby security cameras will provide answers in the days ahead.
The NYPD has asked anyone with information to come forward.
