A Connecticut woman is facing attempted murder charges after police say she tried to poison her estranged husband’s wine and iced tea with antifreeze in the midst of a bitter custody dispute.
Hogan Poisoned Her Ex With Antifreeze

An empty bottle of antifreeze and vodka are shown beside Riverview Drive, Tuesday, October 29, 2024, in Totowa.
Kristen Hogan, 33, was arrested earlier this month and charged with two counts of attempted murder and interfering with an officer. Prosecutors say Hogan laced her husband’s drinks with ethylene glycol — the toxic main ingredient in antifreeze — after months of escalating conflict following their separation in May. Ethylene glycol is a sweet-tasting, odorless liquid found in common automotive and household products. Once ingested, it can cause confusion, vomiting, seizures, and organ failure. Without treatment, it’s often fatal.
Her Victim Barely Survived

Chad Wagy, of Pataskala, talks about the dialysis machine in his bedroom at his home in Pataskala, Ohio on June 30, 2022. Wagy has been on a home based dialysis program for kidney disease. Chad has to do his dialysis regiment for three hours four times a week. His dialysis machine is portable and he has been on vacation and camping trips while taking his treatments. The alleged victim, identified in court documents only as “Victim 1,” is a 34-year-old man who was hospitalized on August 10 after collapsing at home. Doctors determined that he was suffering from acute ethylene glycol poisoning and kidney failure. He was placed on dialysis and treated in the intensive care unit before being released.
The Couple Was Locked In A Custody Battle

Police say Hogan and her ex were locked in a contentious custody battle at the time. Just days before the poisoning, the couple was scheduled for a court hearing on a motion Hogan herself had filed — but she never showed up. Investigators later found her phone connected to the Wi-Fi network at her ex-husband’s home during the exact hours of the hearing, suggesting she may have been inside the house. A few days later, the man drank from a partially opened bottle of wine kept in his refrigerator. Shortly after, his mother found him slurring his words, vomiting, and struggling to stay on his feet. When tests on the wine later came back positive for ethylene glycol, investigators began to piece together a chilling picture.
Hogan’s Internet History Did Her In

An example of a Google search that Justin Chaffier conducted prior to the murder of Nicole Crawford.
A forensic analysis of Hogan’s phone turned up dozens of internet searches for lethal chemicals and dosage amounts — potassium cyanide, ferricyanide, and monoethylene glycol among them — as well as a search for “how much would kill you.” She also looked up the “penalty for not appearing for a court hearing on your own motion.” When confronted by investigators, Hogan allegedly admitted to poisoning her husband’s wine and to spiking his iced tea. According to police, she told them she “never intended to kill him, but just wanted to make him sick as payback for him being mentally abusive.”
She’s Being Held On A Hefty Bond

Hogan, who prosecutors described as financially well-off and accustomed to a “comfortable lifestyle,” is being held on a $1 million bond. Her next court date has not yet been set.
