Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating the death of a school staff member following an alleged assault by a 14-year-old student at a residential therapeutic facility in Swansea. The case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by educators and caregivers who work with youth managing complex behavioral and emotional needs.
Amy Morrell, 53, of Riverside, Rhode Island, was a direct care staff member at Meadowridge Academy, a private school that serves students aged 12 to 21 with social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. According to officials, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening when staff attempted to prevent a student from leaving a dormitory building without permission. During the intervention, the student allegedly kicked Morrell in the chest.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office reported that Morrell collapsed shortly after being struck. Staff members immediately began CPR and contacted emergency services. Emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital, where she received medical treatment overnight. Despite those efforts, Morrell was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon.
The 14-year-old girl was charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and arraigned Thursday morning in Fall River Juvenile Court. Because of her age, her name has not been released. Officials have not announced any additional charges, but the district attorney’s office said the investigation remains active. The medical examiner’s findings on the exact cause and manner of death will determine whether prosecutors pursue upgraded charges.
Local police in Swansea, along with detectives from the Massachusetts State Police unit assigned to the district attorney’s office, responded to the school to begin the investigation. The state’s Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, which oversees the medical examiner’s office, said that no further details could yet be shared about the autopsy or other test results.
Meadowridge Academy issued a public statement expressing deep sadness at Morrell’s death and confirming that counseling and support services are available to both staff and students. Administrators described Morrell as a valued and compassionate member of the school community whose loss will be felt across the campus.
Friends and colleagues have remembered Morrell as someone who cared deeply about her work and the young people she supported. Those close to her said she was patient and committed to helping students overcome significant challenges. A longtime friend described her as someone who found great purpose in her role and genuinely believed in the importance of her work with at-risk youth.
Legal analysts have noted that the case may take time to resolve, as prosecutors await the results of the medical examiner’s review. The final determination of charges will likely depend on whether the autopsy concludes that the kick directly caused Morrell’s death or whether other medical factors contributed.
As the investigation continues, the Swansea community and Meadowridge Academy are mourning the loss of a dedicated professional remembered for her kindness and commitment to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable young people.
