A woman in Poland who vanished as a teenager nearly three decades ago has broken her silence after police discovered her living inside her parents’ home — emaciated, withdrawn, and, by her account, not held against her will.

The woman, identified only as Mirella, was found in late July inside a small apartment in the industrial city of Świętochłowice, roughly 180 miles southwest of Warsaw. She is now 42 years old. According to Polish outlets Fakt, TVP3, and Super Express, neighbors had long believed Mirella was missing — a belief fueled by her parents, who allegedly told people that their daughter had run away or gone to live with her biological family.

When police arrived at the home, they were responding to what was described as a domestic dispute. Officers found Mirella’s 81-year-old mother inside. Her father, reportedly the source of the disturbance, was not present. But what caught officers’ attention wasn’t the argument — it was the sight of Mirella herself, frail and unkempt, living quietly in a back room.

Authorities quickly summoned paramedics, who took her to a hospital for evaluation. After several days of treatment, she was released back to her parents’ care, even as police began to probe how she came to spend nearly three decades off the radar. Mirella, in interviews with local press, insists she was not being held captive. “I haven’t gone out for a long time, I can’t remember,” she told Fakt. Her words have only deepened the mystery surrounding her disappearance — and the question of why her parents appeared to mislead neighbors for years about her whereabouts.

Police say their investigation has so far not found clear evidence that Mirella was forcibly confined. But prosecutors emphasize that the case remains open and complex. “We are collecting evidence and will verify all statements,” local prosecutor Sabina Kuśmierska told Fakt. “There are many threads in this case; we have not yet interviewed her parents or neighbors. We are conducting the investigation for possible psychological and physical abuse.”

Before her disappearance in 1998, Mirella was described as a bright, well-adjusted student. Her former school principal told reporters she had been withdrawn from classes “at the request of her parents” during her first year of high school. From that point on, no one outside the family saw her again. Neighbors say they had occasionally asked about Mirella over the years, only to be told she was living elsewhere. “They said she had found her real parents,” one local resident told Super Express. “We never suspected she was there the whole time.”

Police have not filed charges, and the parents — both elderly — remain under investigation. Mirella, meanwhile, is recovering under medical supervision and receiving psychological care. Supporters in her community have launched a small fundraiser to help her restart her life.
